Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. He described the move as an attack on democracy, warning that suspending the governor, his deputy, and lawmakers undermines the rule of law.
Makinde, a key ally of Nyesom Wike, emphasized that democratic principles must not be sacrificed for political interests. He commended the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governors for taking a firm stand against what he termed an unconstitutional act. According to him, the PDP Governors’ Forum has resolved to challenge the decision in court, vowing to protect the democracy Nigeria has nurtured for nearly three decades.
“This is the time to stand for fairness, equity, and justice,” Makinde declared, urging all right-thinking Nigerians to resist any move that weakens democratic institutions. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that democracy is upheld, regardless of political loyalties.
