Akponye Alphonsus, a victim of kidnapping, has taken a private bus company to court, claiming that the company’s negligence caused his kidnapping.
Alphonsus said that on March 31, 2024, he purchased a ticket at the company’s bus park in Abuja for a journey that was to start by at 8 a.m. and arrive at his location at 5 p.m. that same day.
According to him, the bus didn’t leave until a few minutes after ten in the morning.
He claimed in his statement of claim that the transport company started the journey in a bus that was in extremely poor condition.
He continued by saying that shortly after the journey started, the car experienced a tyre issue, necessitating a stop to replace the damaged tire with a spare one.
“This already dead tyre busted on the highway, wherein the driver lost control of the car and they survived a horrific accident only by the grace of God,” Alphonsus stated in a witness statement.
“The driver had to spend nearly four hours repairing the damaged tire due to his lack of tools, and during that time, the kidnappers took advantage of the situation and abducted the passengers”, he said.
He added that he stayed with the kidnappers for days as his family couldn’t raise the money needed for the ransom. Alphonsus, through his lawyer, demanded the sum of N13m, including N10m, for general damages and N3m for legal fees paid from the transport company.
