Man who Attempted Suicide is kept in Police Custody by the court

A man named Kayode Ojo has been ordered to be kept in jail after attempting to commit suicide inside a police cell, according to a ruling from an Ondo State Chief Magistrate Court located in Odigbo, Odigbo Local Government Area.

The defendant attempted to commit suicide before being detained by the men of the state police command. He was accused of trying to consume a toxic liquid within the cell.

The police filed a single attempted murder charge against him and presented him to the court.
The crime committed violates Section 327 of the Criminal Code Cap. 37 Volume 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006, according to police prosecutor Mr. James Usifo.

Usifo testified before the court that the defendant attempted suicide by ingesting a deadly substance while in police custody that was thought to be a disinfectant. He allegedly attempted suicide while imprisoned in a police cell after being previously jailed for another crime.

To the charge, the defendant entered a guilty plea.

In his decision, Chief Magistrate D. O. Ogunfuyi remanded the defendant to the Okitipupa Correctional Center and continued the case until fact and sentence were determined on October 10, 2023.
