A disturbing incident unfolded on Friday night in Imo State, as gunmen enforcing the sit-at-home order issued by pro-Biafra activist Simon Ekpa, based in Finland, went on a rampage in major markets. The Orie Amaraku market in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area suffered the worst consequences, with the violent assailants targeting traders and residents. A viral video captured the horrifying incident, showing the wanton destruction of vehicles, properties, and the vandalization of shops and goods.
In the video, a voice can be heard warning the locals to comply with the one-week-long directive and avoid the market. The Amaraku community was urged to stay indoors, with a stern admonishment against disobedience. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but many individuals sustained injuries while desperately seeking safety.
A similar incident occurred simultaneously at the Irete market along the Onitsha-Owerri road, as the hoodlums enforcing the sit-at-home order stormed the market. They unleashed a barrage of gunfire for hours, instilling fear and compelling people to flee.
The actions of these gunmen sent a chilling message, significantly impacting the activities of the popular Orie Ogbaku market in the Mbaitoli council area on Saturday. Numerous traders, apprehensive of the gunmen’s presence, suspended their plans to sell their products, while a few took the risk of venturing out.
Henry Okoye, the Police spokesperson in the state, confirmed the incident, assuring the public that the command had deployed personnel to prevent any further escalation of violence or disorder.
