Minister of Power Urges GenCos and DisCos to Enhance Performance

Meeting aims to address challenges in the power sector and boost economic growth.

The Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, has called upon both the Generating companies (GenCos) and the Distribution companies (DisCos) to enhance their performance to ensure the improvement of electricity supply in the country.

In a statement released in Abuja on Saturday, Bolaji Tunji, the Special Adviser for Strategic Communication and Media Relations to the minister, conveyed this message. The minister made this appeal during a meeting with the management teams of GenCos and DisCos in Abuja.

Adelabu emphasized that the meeting aimed to find a long-term solution to the challenges facing the power sector, which have hindered the nation’s economic growth and development.

The minister stressed the importance of regular engagement with all stakeholders involved in the power generation, transmission, and distribution chain. He noted that such gatherings are crucial for obtaining accurate and valuable information about the challenges these operators encounter, as opposed to relying on speculation.

Adelabu stated, “We called this meeting to learn from you, and the only way to salvage a bad situation is to understand the real issues on the ground. You will agree with me that power is the most important issue you need in order to re-energize the economy in terms of achieving the desired economic growth and industrial development, as contained in President Bola Tinubu’s inaugural speech.”

Adelabu encouraged the operators to collaborate for the success of the power industry, emphasizing that the task at hand cannot be accomplished by a single entity. He underlined the significance of the power sector as a driver of economic growth and industrial development, aligning with the President’s vision.

The minister solicited the support of stakeholders to devise practical solutions to the challenges faced by the power sector, beyond theoretical discussions.

He also emphasized the importance of cooperation among the managing directors of GenCos and DisCos across the nation to bring about significant improvements in the power sector. Adelabu asserted that delivering and sustaining electricity supply to various end users, including schools, households, small businesses, and industries, is essential for achieving economic growth and development.

The meeting signals a renewed commitment to address the power sector’s challenges and foster the sustainable development of the nation’s economy through improved electricity supply.
