Nationwide Strike Begins as Labour Unions Demand Higher Minimum Wage

The indefinite nationwide strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) has commenced, with various unions shutting down workplaces in compliance. The strike, which began on Sunday midnight, is in response to the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000 to N494,000. Despite negotiations, the unions insist on the higher wage, citing the expiration of the current wage award in April 2024 and the rising cost of living.

The strike has garnered widespread support from numerous unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria, and National Union of Electricity Employees. Aviation unions have also directed members to withdraw services across Nigerian airports, amplifying the strike’s impact on daily life and the economy. The unions demand not only a higher minimum wage but also a reversal of recent electricity tariff hikes, stressing the unsustainable burden on workers amidst rising living costs.
