A man (names withheld) was about to commit suicide in Igbologun, a locality in the state’s Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, when members of the Lagos State Police Command and nearby residents intervened.
Reporters learned on Wednesday that the 34-year-old was consuming what was likely an insecticide when a worker in the compound adjacent to his home noticed him and called the police.
Around 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday, he claimed, “I was at a construction site and looked into the next compound and saw one man drinking something from a white bottle that I recognized as an insecticide. “As soon as I spotted him, I shouted, prompting a crowd to assemble and run inside his compound to stop him. I then ran to the police station to report as people were assembling. Police officers showed up and hurried him to the hospital.
The incident was confirmed to reporters by the state police public relations officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who also said that the man is currently in police protective custody in the hospital.
Indicating that the individual would face charges, Hundeyin said, “A suicide attempt is a felony because it involves taking life.”
On the other hand, he continued, “Charging the defendant to court relies on the results of his medical treatment. Yes, we will charge him with a crime if he makes it through and is capable of doing so.
He’s still in the hospital. Upon his release, undoubtedly. The breaking of a law constitutes a crime. We will bring him to court since trying to commit suicide is illegal. The magistrate’s decision to exonerate or convict him is now up to them.
