Nollywood actor and producer Kunle Afolayan has revealed that Netflix has stopped funding Nigerian original content. Speaking at the 2024 Zuma International Film Festival in Abuja, Afolayan confirmed that Netflix informed filmmakers of this decision during a recent gathering.
The filmmaker described the move as a major setback for Nigerian producers, especially those who invest heavily in high-quality films. He noted that while he was fortunate to complete seasons two and three of Anikulapo, other filmmakers had their projects canceled.
Afolayan urged filmmakers to stay resilient and focus on producing high-quality content with universal appeal. He emphasized that despite Netflix’s withdrawal, there are still opportunities on other platforms for well-produced Nigerian stories.
