The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Nigeria received a total of 2,314,440 complaints in 2022, according to its annual report. Out of these complaints, the NHRC investigated and concluded 1,643,018 complaints, representing approximately 70.99% of the total received.
The complaints were categorized into five main areas: civil and political rights, economic, social and cultural rights, women and children, vulnerable groups, and developmental rights/emerging human rights. Quality of life issues received the highest number of complaints, with 567,160 complaints, followed by child rights issues with 388,700 complaints.
The report also highlighted the states that received the highest number of complaints. Rivers State topped the list with 275,057 complaints, followed by Kaduna with 242,220 and Delta with 222,398 complaints.
The NHRC’s work involves addressing and investigating complaints related to human rights violations, advocating for human rights protection, and promoting awareness of human rights issues in Nigeria. The annual report provides insight into the types of human rights concerns that people in Nigeria are facing and the areas that require attention and action.
