In a timely plea for prudence, the World Peace Programme for Sustainable Development Network has advised the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to navigate the political turmoil in Niger Republic using the tools of diplomacy, negotiation, and compromise, rather than resorting to a military approach.
Dr. Stella-Rita Awelle Nwachukwu Asogwa, Director of Diplomatic Relations and Women Affairs for the network, shared this counsel during an interview in Abuja. Highlighting the potential repercussions of military action, she emphasized that civilians in Niger Republic could suffer and that the consequences could ripple through Nigeria and the broader West African region. She strongly condemned the military’s actions against the democratically elected President of Niger Republic, urging a swift return to democratic governance.
Commending ECOWAS’ efforts thus far, Dr. Stella-Rita cautioned against military intervention, which could lead to civilian casualties, destruction of lives and property, and even drag in global powers, escalating the situation.
She noted that past instances of poor governance had contributed to military takeovers in African countries, urging civilian leaders to prioritize good governance, rule of law, and accountability to curb the risk of coups.
Drawing attention to potential dangers, Dr. Stella-Rita appealed to ECOWAS and President Tinubu to prioritize the safety and well-being of Nigerians before making foreign policy decisions. She cautioned that a military response might endanger Nigerians along the border and Nigerian businesses.
Dr. Stella-Rita criticized ECOWAS’ decision to put the military on standby, deeming it potentially disruptive to regional peace. While she welcomed the swift restoration of constitutional order in Niger, she stressed that sustainable peace would only emerge through dialogue and cooperation among the contending parties.
Urging an immediate halt to military buildup, she emphasized the need to defuse tension in Niger Republic.
The World Peace Programme for Sustainable Development Network is an advocate for global peace, promoting peaceful solutions to intricate global issues. The program recently introduced a list of peace ambassadors to aid the Nigerian government in its pursuit of harmony.
In an era of uncertainty, the call for diplomatic resolution resonates as a beacon of wisdom, reflecting the essence of peace in a world often marred by conflicts.
