The governor wasted no time in issuing a stern warning to officials in his government, cautioning them against unauthorized generation and expenditure of state revenue. The signing ceremony took place on Wednesday, shortly after the state assembly passed the budget, emphasizing the significance it holds for the development of Niger State.

Expressing his commitment to fostering a strong collaboration with the legislative arm, Governor Bago announced plans to complete the Legislative quarters at the three Arm zone within the next three months, providing suitable accommodation for lawmakers.

In emphasizing the importance of legislative oversight, the Niger governor asserted that the sanctity of the Legislature must be protected. He warned that heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) refusing to undergo scrutiny and status inquiry before the Legislature would face dismissal.

Bago stated, “For the government to do well, somebody must criticize and scrutinize the activities of the government. We should leave our books open in the spirit of accountability.”

The Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, provided insights into the budget, noting that its size was increased by N720 million to address critical areas aligned with the realization of the “New Niger” agenda. He credited the swift passage to the collaborative efforts of the Planning Commission, which actively engaged with the Legislature during the budgeting process.

Sarkin-Daji affirmed the unwavering support of the legislature, pledging to work tirelessly to ensure the realization of the governor’s vision. The 10th Assembly expressed its commitment to the effective implementation of the budget, aligning with the state’s developmental goals.

It is noteworthy that Governor Bago had presented the 2024 budget estimate, titled “Budget of the Future,” to the state assembly on December 19, 2023. The Speaker had previously assured that the legislators would expedite the passage, a promise fulfilled with the approval before the stipulated deadline of December 27, 2023.
