In a bid to tackle the power challenges gripping Nigeria, the Federal Government has announced plans to inject an additional 500 million standard cubic feet of gas into the domestic market. President Bola Tinubu made this announcement during the inauguration of three vital gas infrastructure projects in Ohaji-Egbema, Imo State, and Kwale, Delta State.
The move comes in response to the nationwide blackouts experienced in January 2024 due to gas shortages. Gas companies had ceased supplies to electricity-generating firms over unpaid debts, resulting in a significant drop in power generation.
The newly inaugurated projects, including the expansion of the AHL Gas Processing Plant and the ANOH Gas Processing Plant, are expected to bolster gas supply by approximately 500 million standard cubic feet, marking a 25% increase. President Tinubu stressed the importance of leveraging Nigeria’s abundant gas resources to spur industrial growth and job creation.
The government’s initiatives, such as the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative and executive orders promoting gas development, underscore its commitment to addressing the nation’s energy challenges. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, and NNPCL’s Group CEO, Mele Kyari, commended these projects for bolstering energy security and industrialization efforts.
Seplat Energy reaffirmed its dedication to Nigeria’s energy transition and economic growth, aligning with the government’s Decade of Gas initiative. The injection of additional gas supply is anticipated to provide a reliable power source, furthering Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
