Jose Peseiro will continue as Nigeria’s coach despite agreeing to a pay cut. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced that the 63-year-old coach will lead Nigeria to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after his initial one-year contract ran out in July.
Peseiro’s initial contract paid him $70,000 a month, but due to financial constraints, the new agreement will have his monthly pay reduced to $50,000.
He has been given the target of leading the Super Eagles to at least the semi-finals of the AFCON tournament, which will be hosted by Ivory Coast in January. Nigeria has already secured a place at the tournament with 12 points from five qualifying matches.
The team will need at least a point in their final group match against Sao Tome and Principe to win the group ahead of second-placed Guinea Bissau. Nigeria has called up several uncapped players for the match, including Victor Boniface, Gift Orban, and Jordan Torunarigha.
