The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatened to commence an indefinite strike in public primary and secondary schools in Bayelsa over the non-implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage and promotion arrears. The decision was taken at an executive meeting after an earlier three-day warning strike did not yield the desired results.
The union had given a 14-day ultimatum to the Bayelsa State Government and local councils to address the grievances of teachers, including the failure to implement the N30,000 minimum wage and effect promotions for primary school teachers in the state. The teachers also expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s continuous neglect of their plight.
If the issues are not addressed within the ultimatum period, the teachers in Bayelsa state will proceed with the strike. The strike notice was ratified by the constituent eight local government branches of NUT in Bayelsa.
This strike threat could impact public education in the state, and it highlights ongoing challenges related to teachers’ salaries and welfare in Nigeria.
