Nigerian Government Warns Against Sexual Harassment on Campuses

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has issued a stern warning to the academic community and university staff regarding cases of sexual harassment on campuses. The government has stated that it will deal decisively with those found guilty of such acts.

In a statement, the minister emphasized that sexual harassment is a serious criminal offense and should be addressed decisively whenever it occurs. He also expressed the government’s commitment to addressing this issue in higher education institutions. The minister pledged to establish sexual offenses units in the Ministry of Education and all higher learning institutions to deal with the menace.

The vice-chancellor of the University of Calabar reported that the university had followed due processes in handling the case of alleged sexual harassment, including the suspension of the suspect and the formation of a disciplinary committee. Multiple organizations and civil society groups were brought in as observers to ensure transparency in the process.

The government’s stance reflects its determination to eliminate sexual harassment and protect vulnerable groups within the country’s educational system.
