The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has reaffirmed its ongoing indefinite strike action, despite postponing a scheduled protest. Dr. Innocent Orji, President of NARD, confirmed this on Wednesday during an interview on Channels TV. According to Orji, the Federal Ministry of Health has not engaged with the association regarding their demands.
The strike commenced on July 26 after a two-week notice period for the government to address NARD’s demands. These demands include the provision of the 2023 medical residency training fund, clarification on staff replacement policies, payments of arrears, and an upward adjustment of the consolidated medical salary structure to match its 2014 value.
Orji explained that although NARD decided to temporarily suspend the protest that was supposed to begin on Wednesday, the strike itself will continue. The association’s national executive council plans to review the situation in 72 hours.
Orji also expressed the association’s concern for the well-being of Nigerians and the desire to resolve the issues promptly. He mentioned that NARD members met on Saturday and extended a window for the government to address their concerns before resorting to protests.
Regarding the efforts of the Ministry of Health to resolve the issues, Orji stated that there has been no communication from the ministry. He highlighted the lack of contact from government officials responsible for addressing the matter and criticized the issuance of mere statements without meaningful engagement.
