Gombe State Takes Proactive Measures to Tackle Impending Floods
To address the potential risks of floods and environmental challenges during this year’s rainy season, the Gombe State Government has sprung into action. The move comes after receiving reports from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NHSA) warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and high winds in certain northern states, including parts of Gombe.
Nafada, Yamaltu Deba, and Balanga Local Government Areas (LGAs) have been identified as having a higher risk of flooding. In response to these alerts, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya directed the Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources to collaborate with relevant stakeholders and activate state emergency response resources.
The Ministry swiftly constituted a task force comprising key players such as the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Gombe State Environmental Sanitation and Protection Agency (GOSEPA), Ministries of Works, Health, and Education, as well as non-governmental organizations. Together, they are conducting regular consultative meetings to devise strategies for mitigating the impact of potential weather events and safeguarding lives and property.
The Ministry has also taken proactive steps by conducting aggressive advocacy and community sensitization campaigns in flood-prone areas. These campaigns educate people on self-precautionary and mitigating measures they can take to protect themselves.
To prevent flash floods and ensure proper drainage, the Ministry is undertaking desilting of drainages and water channels, covering a 2km radius in all ten local government headquarters. Additionally, a crisis response unit has been set up to monitor weather patterns and environmental changes closely, facilitating timely responses to any potential threats.
In readiness for emergencies, the government has identified shelter zones in all LGAs to provide a safe haven for displaced individuals. These centers are equipped with essential amenities and services.
Gombe State is taking decisive action to combat environmental challenges and protect its citizens, demonstrating the government’s commitment to proactive disaster management.
