NLC and TUC Declare Nationwide Strike from Midnight on November 14

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have jointly instructed their affiliates to commence a nationwide withdrawal of services from midnight on November 14, 2023. The decision was announced by TUC President Festus Osifo during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.

Osifo stated that the strike action is a response to the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and other executives in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1. The strike will persist until the government addresses its responsibilities at all levels. The attack on Ajaero occurred ahead of a planned state-wide protest in Imo, leading to his arrest by the police, which was later denied.

The strike is intended to protest the assault on union leaders and address pending labour issues in Imo State. Further details on the strike and its objectives are expected to emerge in due course.
