NLC Blamed for Legislators’ 100M Palliative

The House of Representatives has refuted allegations made by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership, claiming that the Federal Government disbursed N100 million to National Assembly members as palliatives.

Christopher Onyeka, the National Assistant Secretary of the NLC, issued a statement in Abuja where he leveled these accusations. In response, Akin Rotimi, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, has dismissed these claims as unfounded and lacking in factual accuracy.

In a statement issued by Rotimi, it stated, “The House of Representatives expresses its concern regarding the news reports that have surfaced in multiple newspapers, electronic, and online media outlets regarding a statement attributed to Mr. Christopher Onyeka, the National Assistant General Secretary of the NLC.”

The statement categorically refuted Onyeka’s assertion that members of the National Assembly had received N100 million as palliatives. It emphasized that there had been no instance where the House of Representatives had received any funds from the executive branch as palliatives. Consequently, the statement condemned Onyeka’s comments as being malicious, irresponsible, and in bad faith.

The House of Representatives also criticized Onyeka for misrepresenting facts to bolster the NLC’s legitimate demands while simultaneously tarnishing the reputation of the National Assembly and inciting the public against the institution. As a result, the House of Representatives demanded an immediate retraction of these allegations and a public apology from the Nigeria Labour Congress.

The statement went on to remind the NLC and all Nigerians that the 10th Assembly of the House of Representatives, in its short tenure of less than 100 days, has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers and the general populace.

Furthermore, the House of Representatives extended an invitation to the NLC to view the National Assembly as partners rather than adversaries. It emphasized its unwavering dedication to improving the well-being of its constituents and reassured Nigerians of its commitment to this cause.
