NLC Calls for Strike in States Delaying ₦70,000 Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed workers in states yet to implement the new ₦70,000 minimum wage to embark on a strike starting December 1, 2024. This directive follows resolutions from the NLC’s recent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, where members expressed frustration over the delay, describing it as a betrayal of workers’ rights amidst the nation’s economic struggles.

In a strongly worded statement, the NLC criticized state governors for disregarding the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act, which guarantees workers fair compensation. The Congress condemned the actions of governors who have not complied, labeling it both illegal and morally wrong. According to the NLC, workers facing economic hardship are being denied justice by leaders who are obligated to protect their welfare.

To ensure compliance, the NLC has announced the formation of a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee tasked with monitoring the rollout of the wage increase nationwide. The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to using industrial action in non-compliant states, emphasizing that Nigerian workers deserve respect and fair treatment.
