Nigeria Labour Congress Announces Two-Day Warning Strike Over Fuel Subsidy Removal”
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to launch a two-day warning strike starting on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. This action comes in response to what the NLC has deemed the government’s failure to adequately address the impact of the subsidy removal on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, as reported by Findwhosabi.
In August, the NLC staged a nationwide protest to voice their concerns about what they referred to as “anti-poor” policies imposed on Nigerians under the Bola Tinubu administration.
The removal of the subsidy on May 29, 2023, resulted in a sharp increase in the price of PMS, which reached N610 per litre. This price hike had a cascading effect on the cost of living for Nigerians.
While the Tinubu administration established committees to devise plans for providing relief to workers affected by the subsidy removal, the NLC observed that these committees had yet to present concrete plans.
A member of the NLC’s national body delivered a succinct message, stating, “There will be a warning strike starting from Tuesday. The national body will issue a notice soon.”
