The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has responded to the police invitation of its President, Joe Ajaero, who is being investigated for alleged terrorism financing and other charges. The NLC linked this development to a recent raid on its headquarters, expressing concerns over the police’s failure to address Ajaero by his official title in the invitation letter. They confirmed the invitation through a statement by Comrade Benson Upah, the Congress’ Head of Information and Public Affairs.
In the statement, the NLC criticized the police for their actions, highlighting that Ajaero was asked to report to the police on August 20th and was warned of a potential arrest if he did not comply. The Congress also questioned the circumstances surrounding the delivery of the invitation letter and emphasized that staff were present at the Labour House when the police claimed it was locked.
The NLC reiterated its displeasure over the earlier raid, accusing the police of excessive force during recent protests and demanding an apology from both the police and the government. The Congress also raised concerns about the safety of its leadership, stating that the police should be held accountable if anything happens to Ajaero or any of its members.
