NLC Warns Telecom Firms to Reverse 50% Tariff Hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned a recent 50% tariff hike by telecom companies and demanded its immediate reversal. Despite an earlier agreement between the Federal Government, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and telecom providers, the companies went ahead with the increase. The NLC has set a March 1, 2025, deadline for a nationwide telecom shutdown if the hike is not rolled back.

In response, the NLC directed Nigerians to boycott MTN, Airtel, and Glo services daily from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM starting February 13, 2025, and to suspend all data purchases. The union urged public mobilization through its state councils and affiliate unions. NLC leaders, Joe Ajaero and Emma Ugboaja, accused telecom firms of breaking trust and criticized the government for failing to protect citizens from corporate exploitation.

The NLC also reviewed Tax Reform Bills and warned against additional burdens on workers. While supporting the need for fiscal reforms, the Congress vowed to fight for fair tax policies. It called on all Nigerians and civil society groups to unite against exploitative economic measures.
