NMA Chairman Highlights Drug Cost Concerns in Nigerian Healthcare

Dr. Babatunde Rosiji, Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Ekiti State, has raised concerns about the adverse effects of the high exchange rate on the health of Nigerians. He stated that the soaring costs of drugs and medical supplies have made it increasingly challenging for average citizens to access essential healthcare.

According to Dr. Rosiji, patients with chronic illnesses like hypertension and diabetes are struggling to obtain a consistent supply of medications. Economic reasons are also discouraging patients from seeking early medical attention.

Speaking at a press conference during the commemoration of the 2023 Physicians’ Week in Ekiti, Dr. Rosiji called on the government to take swift action to address this issue, warning of potential consequences if the situation is left unchecked.

Furthermore, he urged the government not to proceed with plans to stop funding the Medical and Dental Council from the next year. Dr. Rosiji emphasized the importance of this regulatory body and its role in maintaining medical and dental standards in the country.

The NMA chairman also highlighted the brain drain affecting the healthcare sector and expressed hope that the communities they serve would recognize and support the remaining healthcare professionals, rather than antagonizing or fighting them.

Dr. Rosiji praised the commitment and resolve of Ekiti State Governor Mr. Biodun Oyebanji in improving the healthcare sector. He mentioned that the NMA is committed to peaceful advocacy and dialogue for the benefit of the people of Ekiti State.
