“NMA Urges FG to Declare Health State of Emergency”

Medical experts from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) are calling on the Federal Government to take immediate action and declare a health emergency. This move aims to address the challenges within the sector and make it more appealing to healthcare professionals.

The NMA Ekiti State Branch has also emphasized the importance of allocating a minimum of 15% of the national budget to healthcare, as outlined in the Abuja Declaration. This commitment, they believe, will demonstrate the government’s dedication to nurturing the growth of the health sector at all governance levels.

These appeals were outlined in a communique released after the 26th Annual General Meeting of NMA Ekiti. The meeting focused on the significance of inclusive medical legislation for stabilizing the health industry.

NMA Ekiti State Chair, Dr. Babatunde Rosiji, and Secretary, Dr. Moses Dada, jointly signed the communique. They urged President Bola Tinubu to take bold measures in revitalizing the struggling health sector.

The doctors stressed, “It’s crucial for the government to declare a health emergency and create a favorable environment that attracts and retains healthcare professionals within the country.”

They further expressed concerns that if the health sector remains neglected, unqualified practitioners might eventually take over medical institutions. The increasing disregard for the health sector is contributing to the rise of imposters posing as doctors, even conducting fake graduation ceremonies to endorse their apprentices as “medical professionals.”

The AGM also demanded swift action from the Federal Government to tackle the escalating costs of medications and medical supplies. They highlighted the necessity of preventing the expenses associated with healthcare from becoming so exorbitant that patients are driven away from seeking treatment in hospitals.

The NMA called for a comprehensive implementation of the National Health Insurance Act, ensuring that all citizens are covered. Additionally, they advocated for a review of the current drug pricing structure to reflect the present economic conditions.

Acknowledging Ekiti State Government’s efforts in providing support for various segments of society, the NMA encouraged other state governors to follow suit and provide well-considered relief measures for the masses.

“The recent pay parity approval by Governor Oyebanji for clinical workers at the Hospitals’ Management Board will attract new talents and enhance service delivery,” stated the NMA. They expressed optimism that similar adjustments related to minimum wage and pay parity would also be extended to colleagues in Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital and Primary Health Care Development Agency.
