Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, the Territorial Coordinator of NEMA, confirmed this incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. The building collapsed around 10:00 p.m. on Friday at No. 14 Ikpoh Street in Surulere.
One of the occupants of the building, Mr. Gervase Anyanwu, a businessman, informed NAN that all the other residents were able to evacuate the building safely before it collapsed entirely. Anyanwu mentioned that a loud sound was heard from one of the wings of the building before it came down, prompting the occupants to gather at a safe point for evacuation.
He credited the lack of casualties to what he described as the “grace of God.”
However, another resident of the street noted that the building had exhibited signs of distress before its collapse.
At the time of the report, the excavation of the rubble from the collapsed building had not yet begun, but various government agencies responsible for emergency response were present at the scene.
