No Specific Minimum Wage Figure from Federal Government Yet – NLC President Joe Ajaero

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, announced that the labour union has not yet received a specific proposed figure for the new national minimum wage from the federal government. This update came during his address to journalists at the tripartite committee meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

Ajaero mentioned that the committee is still in session and that the details will be shared with the public once the deliberations are concluded. When asked if a figure had been presented, he confirmed, “Not yet,” and explained that the figure had not been introduced to the committee but is expected to be discussed in the general session.

He expressed hope that the discussions would conclude by Friday, stating, “We are all praying that everything shall be okay by tomorrow (Friday).” Regarding speculation about a ₦105,000 figure, Ajaero clarified, “Information on ₦105,000 is not before us, either officially or unofficially.”

The Minister of State for Labour, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, also noted that updates would be provided once talks are finalized. Similarly, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, who chairs the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), stated that the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage aims to finalize a new figure by Friday. He refuted rumours about an agreed figure of ₦105,000, emphasizing the committee’s dedication to reaching a conclusive decision in the next session scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday.

This continued effort underscores the ongoing negotiation process, with all parties involved working towards establishing a sustainable and acceptable minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
