The Nigerian film industry has been hit with another loss as popular Nollywood actor, Big Larry, passed away on Friday. His death was confirmed by producer Stanley Ontop, who shared the news through an emotional Instagram post. Ontop, along with a picture of the late actor, expressed his sorrow, stating, “Nollywood actor Big Larry has just passed away. What caused his demise is yet to be known. May your soul rest in peace, Big Larry. Nollywood, Asaba mourns.”
Big Larry’s death is one of several that Nollywood has faced since 2024 began, with other prominent losses including Mr. Ibu, Amaechi Muonagor, Sisi Quadri, Ganiyu ‘Ogunjimi’ Oyeyemi, and Junior Pope. In response to these tragic events, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) organized a four-day prayer and fasting session in May 2024, seeking divine intervention for the industry. The session was led by Jerry Eze, founder of Streams of Joy International.
In a related development, the Yoruba film sector is also mourning the death of filmmaker Shina Sanyaolu. Sanyaolu, known for his impactful work in Nollywood, passed away recently, though the cause remains unknown. His death was confirmed by Bolaji Amusan, President of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria.
