NSCDC Cracks Down on Illegal Mining in Gombe State

Gombe, Nigeria, October 22, 2023 – In a decisive action against illegal mining, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested three individuals involved in unauthorized mining activities in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State. The arrests were made at a site in the Gamawa community in Akko LGA, where the suspects were operating without the proper clearance approved by the Federal Government.

State Commandant of the NSCDC, Muhammad Muazu, confirmed the arrests, underlining the significant concerns regarding illegal mining in the country. These unlawful activities pose threats to the environment, contributing to issues such as environmental degradation, soil erosion, deforestation, water pollution, and various security challenges.

Muazu emphasized that the arrests represent a pivotal step in the fight against illegal mining and serve as a strong message to individuals engaged in such activities within the state.

The operation took place after a tip-off from concerned citizens, who reported the illegal mining activities. The arrested individuals had claimed ownership of the site and asserted that they possessed a license. However, upon inspecting their documents, it was revealed that the approval they held was for laterite sand extraction, not coal mining.

In response, the NSCDC reported the incident to the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development and the Gombe State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Consequently, the NSCDC has ordered the temporary suspension of activities at the site, pending proper clearance from the relevant authorities. This measure ensures that all mining activities within the state adhere to the government’s mining laws and regulations.

Sanusi Pindiga, the Gombe State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, echoed the importance of the operation. He announced the suspension of all mining activities across the state and called on all miners to appear before the ministry for screening and clearance.

Pindiga highlighted the ministry’s commitment to addressing the issue of illegal mining, emphasizing the significance of miners reporting to the appropriate authorities before engaging in mining activities. He expressed concerns about the potential dangers and effects of mining activities on the lives of local communities, farmlands, and the environment.

The commissioner warned that failing to comply with the ministry’s directive could result in serious consequences and urged miners in the state to cooperate with the ministry to avoid unfavorable outcomes.

This action demonstrates the commitment of authorities to tackle illegal mining and protect the environment, local communities, and resources in Gombe State.
