Following the alleged murder of a man who has not yet been recognized by members of the Taskforce, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offenses Enforcement Unit, tensions may be rising in the Mile 2 neighborhood of Lagos.
On Tuesday morning, a video that was going around on social media showed what appeared to be a campfire that local adolescents had built on the freeway. At the same time, the state police command reported that officers have been sent to the scene.
In the video, a man could be heard warning others to stay away from Mile 2 because Taskforce agents there, he claimed, had killed a man. “We are now at mile 2.” Someone has been killed by Taskforce. It’s closed down and off limits. In the 18-second video, the voice can be heard asking, “Please stay away from the Mile 2 area.
Raheem Gbadeyanka, the Taskforce’s spokesperson for the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offenses Enforcement Unit, said that no representatives from the organization were there.
When asked, he replied that none of his men were there.
He denied knowing of any operations being conducted in the region by the state taskforce and insisted that they were not even close to the Mile 2 area when asked whether they were.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police’s public relations officer, however, said that officers had been sent to the area in response to the video that had been posted on X. It’s not yet possible to corroborate that assertion. The information is still hazy. I can confirm that patrol units from the police department have arrived at the location, though. With the removal of impediments, traffic is starting to move freely once more. Updates will come later, according to Hundeyin, who spoke on X Tuesday via @BenHundeyin.
