The Ogun State House of Assembly has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate the alleged illegal arrest and detention of innocent residents of the state on trumped-up charges by the police in collaboration with suspected land grabbers. The Speaker of the House, Olakunle Oluomo, made this appeal during a plenary session where lawmakers reported rampant cases of land grabbing in their constituencies.
Oluomo expressed concern that innocent residents of Ogun State were being unjustly detained due to collusion between land grabbers and some security agents. He urged the Inspector General of Police to intervene and ensure that innocent people were not made to suffer due to false charges. Oluomo also highlighted the importance of the State Anti-land Grabbing (Amendment) Bill, which aims to address land-related issues and establish a task force to handle such matters.
The bill’s sponsor, Hon. Damilola Soneye, emphasized the need for the amendment to combat the increasing problem of land grabbing in the state. Other lawmakers also expressed their concerns about the negative impact of land grabbers on the state’s peace, progress, and development.
Additionally, the Assembly received a list of ten commissioner nominees from Governor Dapo Abiodun, who will undergo screening by the lawmakers. These developments highlight ongoing efforts to address land-related issues and strengthen governance in Ogun State.
