The Ogun State House of Assembly has expressed its readiness to investigate the recurring disruptions to the academic calendar at the state-owned Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta (MAPOLY).
The teaching and non-teaching staff of MAPOLY recently embarked on a strike to demand the payment of their unpaid three months’ salaries. In addition, students protested against the increase in admission acceptance fees from N35,000 to N50,500 and the delayed release of examination results.
At a plenary session, the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Science, and Technology, Yusuf Amosun, presented reports on the frequent disruptions to the academic calendar at MAPOLY. After debating the issue, the Assembly resolved to organize a public hearing to address the challenges affecting the institution and to safeguard students from unnecessary delays caused by strikes.
During the public hearing, submissions will be taken from MAPOLY’s Governing Board, management, staff, and students to seek a resolution to the ongoing issues.
In a separate development, the Ogun State House of Assembly passed the Ogun State Legislative Funds Management Law, 2023, and the Ogun State Judiciary Funds Management Law, 2023. These laws aim to ensure the judicious allocation of funds to the legislative and judicial branches of government, in preparation for the implementation of their financial autonomies.
