ENUGU, NIGERIA – The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has expressed optimism about the potential release of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, before the end of 2023, as a result of ongoing confidential negotiations between the organization and relevant authorities. In response, Ohanaeze has called on all pro-Biafran agitators to halt hostilities against the Federal Government for 40 days, commencing on October 31.
In a statement released on Sunday by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze emphasized the importance of discipline during this crucial period to facilitate progress in the ongoing negotiations.
The statement by Ohanaeze read, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the preeminent socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, is pleased to announce its foresight regarding ongoing confidential negotiations that indicate the possibility of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, regaining his freedom by the end of the year 2023.
“However, in order to facilitate progress in this matter, Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges Biafra agitators to uphold a ceasefire for a period of 40 days, abstaining from any offensive aggression commencing on October 31, 2023. It is imperative that Biafra agitators exhibit discipline during this crucial period.”
The organization stressed the primary challenge faced in securing Nnamdi Kanu’s release is ensuring that all offensive aggression is ceased for 40 days, as this would pave the way for the desired solutions through diplomatic channels.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly believes that engaging with all relevant authorities through diplomatic channels remains the most effective approach to achieve the desired results. We implore Ndigbo to exercise patience and understanding throughout this critical period,” the statement noted.
While acknowledging the pain and hardship endured by the people of the South-East since Nnamdi Kanu’s incarceration, Ohanaeze expressed its confidence that his release would serve as a resounding surprise to the South-Eastern people. They also appealed to Nigerians who may have been offended by Kanu to embrace forgiveness and prioritize the greater interests of Nigeria.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo assured its commitment to working behind the scenes, rallying and mobilizing all relevant parties to achieve the crucial objective. The organization urged Biafra agitators to observe a ceasefire for 40 days, which it believes will significantly contribute to ongoing negotiations and enhance the prospects of Nnamdi Kanu’s release.
