Outrage in Anambra Community as Youth Dies in Police Custody: Protests Erupt

The residents of Aguleri community, located in Anambra East of Anambra State, recently expressed their discontent through protests following the unfortunate demise of Mr. Chidubem Ezenwa, a young member of their community. Mr. Ezenwa, along with three others, was taken into police custody three weeks ago after being accused of involvement in a violent incident at a local hotel.

Mr. Sunday Ezenwa, the father of the deceased, shared with reporters during the protest that his son had returned from Asaba, Delta State, to visit his friend who had been in an accident. Unfortunately, he was apprehended by the police and, tragically, suffered torture while in custody, eventually leading to his untimely demise.

Once they received the news about their friend’s passing, he and his companions decided to gather at a hotel and await the transportation of their friend’s body to the mortuary. During this time, one of them accidentally broke a bottle while reflecting on their friend’s demise. As a result, they promptly settled the bill for the damaged item when the hotel staff raised concerns. Unfortunately, the president general of their community, Ifeanyi Iloakasia, intervened and involved the police, leading to their arrest. Tragically, while in police custody, he passed away.

The father also mentioned that, as of now, they hadn’t received any updates regarding his son, and the police hadn’t given them his body, if indeed he is no longer alive. Expressing his grief, he said ‘It’s really difficult for us to come to terms with the possibility of our son’s death. We believe that if he has passed away, the authorities should allow us to have his body’.
