Oyo State civil servants have resumed work on August 7, 2023, marking the end of a week-long strike organized by the state’s labor unions. The strike, which began on July 31, was called by the NLC, Trade Union Congress, Nigeria Union of Pensioners, and Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees to protest non-payment of salary deductions, leave bonuses, and to demand a review of pension allowances.
During the strike, government activities were brought to a halt, affecting various services. The workers requested that Governor Seyi Makinde personally address their concerns instead of using proxies. In response, Governor Makinde spoke to the workers at the civil service secretariat entrance, acknowledging the negative impact of the strike on the state’s revenue. He promised to address their demands through quarterly meetings with union leaders.
Governor Makinde’s assurance led to the end of the strike. The chairman of the NLC in Oyo State, Mr. Kayode Martins, confirmed that the decision was made as the governor had addressed some of their demands and had committed to addressing the remaining issues promptly.
With this development, normalcy has returned to Oyo State’s public services as civil servants return to their duties.
