Palliative crisis: Govs tackle Akpabio, deny receiving FG N1tn lifeline

Governors refuted Senate President Godswill Akpabio‘s assertion on Thursday that the federal government gave states N1.08 trillion to alleviate the nation’s food crisis.

As the Vice-Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, state governor Seyi Makinde testified on Thursday at the opening of the renovated central mosque in the Iseyin neighborhood of Oyo State that the Senate President’s claim that state governors received N30 billion apiece was untrue.

Additionally, state representatives from Katsina, Enugu, Lagos, Zamfara, Benue, Osun, and Zamfara states told reporters on Thursday that their governments had not received N30 billion.

In September 2023, state governments received N2 billion apiece from the N5 billion loan that the federal government had extended to them as a stopgap measure to lessen the impact of the fuel subsidy elimination.
The Federal Government’s economic changes, which included eliminating subsidies, led to a crisis in the cost of living that affected the entire nation due to rising transportation expenses, rising food prices, and the depreciating value of the naira.
During Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio stated that an unverified rumor suggested that state governors got N30 billion apiece from the Federation Account to help with inflation and the high cost of food in their individual states.

In order to help them improve the food situation, he reportedly stated, “I must say that unverified report has it that each of the state governments in the last few months has received additional N30bn from Federal Inland Revenue Service outside their normal allocations from the Federation Account.”
