Palm oil thief in Kaduna receives jail sentence

Shitu Yakubu, 32, was sentenced to two years in prison by a customary court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, for stealing 25 litres of palm oil and a sewing machine.

Yakubu was charged with criminal trespass, breaking and entering, and theft in violation of the Penal Code.

According to the prosecution, Insp Esther Bishen, the complainant, Dorcas Jonah, complained to the court that on July 15, in the Bayan Loco neighborhood of Kafanchan, the defendant broke into her residence on Ogbomosho Street and took a sewing machine and 25 litres of palm oil.

The defendant entered a guilty plea and asked the judge for mercy.

The prosecutor requested that he be tried summarily in accordance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of 2017.

For the third count charge, Judge George Gwani sentenced the offender to two years in prison or a N50,000 fine.

Gwani also sentenced him to three months in prison or a fine of N15,000 for the first and second offences.
