Pate: Economic Support and Mental Health Services Prevent Suicide

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Ali Pate, emphasized evidence-based strategies for preventing suicide during a press briefing in commemoration of the 2023 World Suicide Prevention Day in Abuja, under the theme ‘Creating hope through action.’

Pate highlighted several strategies for suicide prevention:

Strengthening Economic Support: Economic assistance can alleviate financial stress contributing to suicidal thoughts.

Improving Access to Qualitative and Affordable Mental Health Services: Ensuring accessible and affordable mental health services offers crucial support and treatment.

Creating a Protective Environment: Reducing access to lethal means, like firearms and toxic substances, among at-risk individuals can save lives.

Promoting Connectedness: Peer norm programs and community engagement efforts foster belonging and reduce isolation, a suicide risk factor.

Teaching Coping and Problem-Solving Skills: Equipping individuals with coping and problem-solving skills enhances their ability to navigate life’s challenges.

Identifying and Supporting Those at Risk: Recognizing at-risk individuals and providing appropriate support and intervention is vital for prevention.

Collating Data on Suicidal Behaviors: Gathering data on suicidal behaviors informs planning and targeted intervention.

Suicide is a global concern, with over 700,000 annual deaths, mainly in low and middle-income countries. It ranks as the fourth leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29. Risk factors include mental health disorders, substance abuse, isolation, life events, unemployment, and access to suicide means.

Pate stressed that suicide is preventable, influenced by psychosocial, cultural, and environmental factors. Nigeria has made progress in suicide prevention, including enacting the National Mental Health Act in 2021, improving mental health services access, and protecting individuals’ rights.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reaffirmed that suicide is preventable through timely, evidence-based, cost-effective interventions. Effective national responses require comprehensive multi-sectoral suicide prevention strategies. WHO pledged ongoing support for Nigeria’s mental health and suicide prevention initiatives.

Furthermore, ensuring access to mental health services and preventing suicide linked to disabilities contributes to achieving good health.

Addressing mental health, reducing stigma, and supporting individuals in need are essential to save lives and create hope through action in suicide prevention.
