In a recent press conference, Ondo State’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed concerns over the economic impact of an alleged cabal’s influence during Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s prolonged absence. The PDP is calling for Akeredolu to temporarily transfer power to his deputy, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to prevent further economic decline.
Mr. Fatai Adams, the State Chairman of the PDP, claimed that the absence of clear leadership has allowed individuals within and outside the government to exploit the situation, resulting in the misappropriation of state resources. Adams emphasized the urgency of power transmission to the deputy governor, citing constitutional provisions for such situations.

In response, the APC Chairman in Ondo State, Mr. Ade Adetimehin, dismissed the PDP’s claims, challenging them to identify members of the alleged cabal. Adetimehin labeled the accusations as baseless and suggested that the PDP was resorting to desperate measures due to its diminishing influence.
Adams reiterated the need for power transmission, citing Akeredolu’s own advice to the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing health over political responsibilities.
Reacting swiftly, Adetimehin accused the PDP of attempting to gain attention, describing them as a “drowning party.” He asserted that there was no evidence of a cabal influencing the government and suggested that the PDP’s claims were politically motivated.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Charles Titiloye, also refuted the allegations, challenging the PDP to provide evidence of the alleged cabal’s existence instead of making unfounded accusations.
Governor Akeredolu’s prolonged absence, coupled with political challenges faced by the deputy governor, has raised concerns about governance and political stability in Ondo State. Akeredolu, who returned to the country in September after an extended medical leave abroad, has remained outside the state, residing in Ibadan, Oyo State.
