PDP tells NASS to investigate Tinubu’s presidency over minimum wage

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the National Assembly to investigate President Bola Tinubu’s presidency in light of the leaked one billion memo.

A leaked memo revealed that Tinubu approved N500 million as the first installment of N1 billion for the formation of a 37-man Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage.
Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, purportedly wrote the document.

However, the PDP described the alleged approval of the large sum for a routine government activity such as committee inauguration as the “height of profligacy, imprudence, and financial recklessness, which further validates its position that the Tinubu-led government is a cesspit of corruption where officials engage in brazen and reckless treasury-looting.”

The opposition party issued the demand in a statement signed by its spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, on Friday.

The statement reads: “It is highly provocative and unpardonable that at the time the nation is suffering acute food shortage; millions of Nigerians are starving due largely to inadequate investment in food production.

“It is even more revealing that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, allegedly requested for an audacious sum of N1.8 billion for the event which was later scaled down to N1 billion, out of which President Tinubu reportedly directed the SGF to “start with N500 million first”.

“This demonstrates that the APC administration is callous and unconcerned with the suffering of Nigerians, whom President Tinubu called as “ordinary people out there” during his 2024 budget presentation to the National Assembly.

“Nigerians may now see how our national treasury and cash intended for their well-being are being stolen recklessly by Tinubu-led APC officials.

This appears to be just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how looters in the APC administration are cashing out with public funds under the guise of the presidency, as evidenced by the reported plundering of over N44 billion in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.”

“The PDP urges on the Tinubu Presidency to speak out, come clean, and face the country on this serious charge, particularly at a time when Nigerians are facing severe economic hardship.

“Our Party demands that the National Assembly, pursuant to its powers under Section 88 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) immediately commence investigation into this matter which is already agitating the minds of Nigerians across the country.”
