The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the resignation of Senator Samuel Anyanwu from his position as the party’s National Secretary. This demand arises from his candidacy for the upcoming governorship election in Imo State scheduled for November 11.
Senator Adolphus Wabara, the BoT Chairman, issued a statement on Saturday, citing the party’s constitutional provision that prohibits holding dual positions. The statement urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to ensure that Anyanwu promptly vacated his role as National Secretary to concentrate on the impending election, which is less than 30 days away.
Wabara stated, “It has recently come to the attention of the Board of Trustees that the current Imo State governorship candidate of our party, Sen Anyanwu, is still holding on to the office of the National Secretary of the party. Not only is this morally wrong as no one is allowed to hold dual positions, but also against the constitutional provision of our party, which provides for a mandatory requirement of resignation for any party office holder who wishes to contest any elective position.”
He also referenced Section 47(5) of the PDP constitution, which allows an officer elected into the executive committee to resign from their office with a 30-day notice in writing, except when resigning to run for an elective office.
However, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, issued a statement on Saturday refuting claims that the NWC intended to remove Anyanwu from his position. Ologunagba described these claims as misleading and divisive, stating that Anyanwu remained the National Secretary of the party and the candidate for the Imo governorship election.
