In a bid to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party (LP), former presidential candidate Peter Obi met with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the early hours of Friday. The meeting, which began late Thursday night and continued into Friday, was part of Obi’s efforts to foster reconciliation and unity within the party.
Obi emphasized the importance of harmony and mutual understanding between the NLC and the Labour Party, urging members to set aside their differences and work together with a shared sense of purpose and vision. He revealed plans for a comprehensive stakeholders’ meeting involving NLC leadership and Labour Party Chairman Julius Abure to harmonize all interests and perspectives.
Following the meeting with the NLC, Obi also engaged in a constructive discussion with Governor Alex Otti, laying the groundwork for future collaboration and progress. He expressed confidence that through open communication, empathy, and a willingness to listen, the leadership crisis would be resolved, and the party would emerge stronger and more united.
The leadership of the Labour Party has been under scrutiny, with NLC Chairman Joe Ajaero accusing the party’s leadership of deviating from its founding principles. The NLC condemned the national convention held on March 27 by Abure-led leadership in Anambra State, which the Labour Party Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman Comrade S.O.Z. Ejiofor and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) also deemed illegal.
Ejiofor assured stakeholders of the BoT’s commitment to organizing an all-inclusive national convention to reclaim and reposition the Labour Party. He commended Peter Obi and other key stakeholders for not endorsing the controversial convention and pledged to initiate a transparent process starting from grassroots congresses to ensure the participation of all genuine party members.
