Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has made it clear that he is not interested in power for its own sake. Speaking in Abuja at a national conference on strengthening democracy, Obi emphasized that any coalition must focus on the well-being of Nigerians rather than political gains. He underscored the need to address the pressing issues of poverty, education, and security, which continue to affect everyday citizens.
Obi lamented Nigeria’s current state, describing it as a country that “breeds poverty daily.” He called for conversations centered on fixing the nation, saying, “Let’s talk about the future of the country. It’s not about power grabs; it’s about caring for Nigerians, ensuring children are in school, and addressing the issues that truly matter.”
The former governor also condemned the monetization of politics, warning that it encourages corruption and misuse of public funds. He stated, “If I steal public money to win an election, I gain power and immunity from prosecution. We must end this cycle because it fuels corruption.” Obi’s remarks highlighted his vision for a Nigeria rooted in integrity and governance that prioritizes its people.
