Peter Obi Reflects on Nigeria’s Democracy Day: Calls for Return to Genuine Democracy

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has raised concerns about Nigeria’s democratic principles as the nation commemorates Democracy Day after 25 years. He criticized the current state, likening it to “classical state capture,” pointing to systemic corruption, insecurity, limited freedom of speech, rising poverty, and hunger as evidence. Obi emphasized the country’s low rankings in global indices like the Democracy Index, Corruption Perception Index, Rule of Law Index, and World Press Freedom Index, indicating democratic shortcomings.

Obi urged a return to genuine democracy, advocating for collective defense of democratic institutions, adherence to governing laws, accountability, and responsible governance. He called for a people-oriented democracy, stressing the importance of accountability, respect for citizens’ rights, and prioritizing the welfare of the poor. Obi highlighted the need to use the commemoration of June 12 to recommit to true democracy, urging respect for democratic institutions, obedience to governing laws, and responsible governance as outlined in the constitution.
