Amid ongoing leadership crises in the Labour Party (LP), legal adviser Kehinde Edun has affirmed that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, continues to engage with the Julius Abure-led leadership. Despite the disputes, Obi’s interactions suggest he remains committed to the party. In September 2024, Obi attended a meeting convened by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, where Nenadi Usman was appointed interim leader. However, subsequent court rulings have reinstated Julius Abure as National Chairman.
The Appeal Court, in its November 2024 decision, upheld Abure’s leadership, with Justice Hamma Barka confirming the verdict had not been overturned. Speaking on Channels Television, Edun revealed that Obi regularly communicates with the Abure camp and has not indicated plans to leave the party. This ongoing interaction underscores Obi’s tacit alignment with the party’s court-recognized leadership despite internal divisions.
Acknowledging the damage caused by the internal crisis, Edun assured party members that efforts are underway to reconcile factions and unify the LP. He emphasized the leadership’s commitment to peace, clarifying that the party had not instigated legal actions against its members, focusing instead on resolving disputes through dialogue and inclusivity.
