Police arrest A’Ibom police officer for killing farmer

Inspector Oliver Akang has been apprehended by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for allegedly taking part in the murder of farmer Umoh Charlie on September 9, 2023.

This information was provided in an interview with reporters on Sunday by SP Odiko Ogbeche-Macdon, the state police public relations officer.

According to Ogbeche-Macdon, Olatoye Durosinmi, the state commissioner of police, had given the State Criminal Investigation Department directions on how to handle the matter.

The incident is being handled at the State CID by the Deputy Commissioner on the direction of the Commissioner of Police, who mandated a thorough investigation. The involved officer is still in detention. The command has never remained silent and is prepared to address any outstanding problem, he declared.

On September 9, 2023, Akang and five other police officers assigned to the command’s Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Cultism Unit allegedly raided the village of Ibong Otoro and opened fire.
According to information, Charlie was injured by a bullet that was purportedly fired from Akang’s rifle during the operation.

After killing the father of four, the policeman allegedly departed the area.
Esther, the deceased’s sister, and Destiny, his brother, made this information public.
But now, justice is what we seek. Before he passed away, our brother had four children, the oldest of whom is now ten years old. Now that his wife is unemployed, there is no one to care for the children, Esther said.
