police carry out autopsy after suspected cultist dies in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has begun an autopsy on a suspected cultist who died in hospital after allegedly biting his co-cellmates while being held in police custody.

The police had launched an undercover operation in the Atoyo area of Sagamu in the state, arresting two alleged cultists, Oduyiga Seyi Samson “m,” 39 years old, and Gbenga Adejoke’m’.

During interrogation, the couple admitted to being members of the Buccaneer and Eiye confraternities, with Seyi admitting to being initiated in 2015.

According to the command, the dead were not tortured to death.

“The deceased was charged with cult-related activities and was brought to court on Thursday, November 23, 2023, where he was to be arraigned on a cultism case in Isabo Abeokuta, but the court did not sit, and he was returned to Eleweran in Abeokuta the same Thursday.”
“Seyi was to be taken back to court on the next available day that the court will sit, which is Friday, November 24, 2023,” stated the command’s public relations officer, Omolola Odutola.

“The command has a strong commitment to upholding fundamental human rights, particularly when it comes to suspect treatment,” the PPRO noted. Torture is a violation of our protocols and beliefs.

The state police leadership is well-versed in the legal framework that protects the rights of people detained.”
According to authorities, Seyi went mad at 05:00 hours, shouting, biting, and assaulting other suspects in the jail until he became weary.

“Police were called, and he was taken to the police hospital, then to Ijaye General Hospital, Abeokuta, where he was joined by other injured suspects.” Other suspects were treated and released, but Seyi died while under medical care; every other allegation is therefore disproved, as the correct position is what has been described above.

“The Police will provide additional information as soon as the autopsy report for the deceased is available.” “However, the Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun Mustapha, expresses condolences to the deceased family,” according to the statement.
