HRM Ogwong Okon A. Abang, the paramount ruler of Akwa Ibom State’s Mbo Local Government Area, was abducted in his Ebughu Palace but was later freed following the payment of an alleged N50 million ransom.
The monarch’s release was confirmed by ASP Timfon John, the spokesperson for the State Police.
John didn’t elaborate on whether money was exchanged; he just stated, “Yes, it’s true,” that he had been released.
“The monarch was released early this morning, and I can tell you the abductors collected 50 Million Naira to release him,” stated a community leader who begged to remain anonymous.
The knowledge that some local youths were among the abductors has left the community angry. We’ve promised to investigate this thoroughly and hold them accountable.
The root of the entire issue is a combination of avarice on the part of some cunning community members and their jealousy of the high position held by the Paramount Rulers. May his dominion last forever.
“The queen was shot during his kidnapping, but she is healing quickly and will soon be released from the hospital,” the statement reads. “The monarch has been brought to a hospital for proper medical care.”
Around 9 p.m. on May 18, the kidnappers opened fire inside the palace and took the monarch captive. Obonganwan Okon Abang, the monarch’s wife, was injured in the leg.
Concerns about the state’s growing insecurity were raised by the incident, especially in light of the murder and kidnapping of prominent figures. The state’s Oro ethnic group is particularly vulnerable because of its broken road system and its porous rivers.
