The Nigeria Police Force has summoned Joe Ajaero, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for questioning. He is being investigated over allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, and related offences. The invitation letter, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu, warned that if Ajaero fails to appear, a warrant for his arrest will be issued.
This development follows recent tensions between the NLC and the government, especially after a raid on the NLC headquarters. The NLC accused the government of targeting the organization and rejected the police’s explanation for the raid. They demanded an apology, the return of seized items, and the release of those detained during the operation.
The NLC also expressed concerns over what they see as government interference in their internal affairs, including a proposed reduction in trade union leaders’ tenure. They argue that such actions violate labour laws and international standards, dismissing the police’s reasons for the raid as inconsistent and a cover-up.
