Political Crisis Rocks Rivers State: South-South Elders Forum Leader Offers Insights

Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, the National Coordinator of South-South Elders Forum and former spokesman for the Pan Niger Delta Forum, recently shared his thoughts on the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State in an interview with Dennis Naku.

Explosion at Rivers State House of Assembly: Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe expressed his strong condemnation of the explosion that rocked the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly the legislative chambers. He emphasized the misuse of taxpayers’ money and the unfortunate timing of such an incident when the state had more pressing issues to address.

Impeachment Attempt and Division in the State House of Assembly: Sara-Igbe highlighted the divisive nature of the impeachment attempt on Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He acknowledged that some individuals supported the attempt, but he also pointed out that it was not in the best interest of Rivers State. The political landscape is diverse, with various interests, leading to differing opinions on the matter.

Influence of Former Governor Nyesom Wike: The interviewee acknowledged that former Governor Nyesom Wike played a significant role in the unfolding crisis. Wike openly stated his involvement in the impeachment process. Sara-Igbe mentioned that Wike initially supported Governor Fubara but later changed his stance, leading to the current political turmoil.

Intervention from External Figures: Sara-Igbe commented on the reported intervention of figures like President Bola Tinubu. He noted that Governor Fubara might not be entirely receptive to such intervention. Wike appeared determined to continue pursuing his objectives.

Role of So-called Elders: Sara-Igbe expressed skepticism about the involvement of “Peoples Democratic Party elders” who seemed aligned with Wike’s interests. He questioned their intentions, suggesting that their primary aim might be to exploit the governor rather than genuinely resolve the crisis.

Advice to Governor Fubara: The interviewee advised Governor Fubara to assert control over his government and initiate a system that ensures loyalty among key appointees. He stressed the need for the governor to surround himself with loyal individuals and take action to stabilize the state.

Influence of Traditional Rulers in Tackling Insecurity: Sara-Igbe recommended amending the constitution to empower traditional rulers, giving them specific responsibilities in addressing security issues. He believed that if traditional rulers were granted more authority in the realm of security, they could effectively combat insecurity at the grassroots level.

The interview provides insights into the complex political dynamics in Rivers State, highlighting the role of influential figures and the need for governance reforms to promote stability and security.
